Norwich City Football Club
Norwich City Football Club, also known as The Canaries, are professional football club based in Norwich, Norfolk. The club was originally founded in 1902 by a group of friends. They were originally known as the Citizens and played in blue and white. The name Canaries was linked to the club in 1905 and came from the popular past time of keeping the birds. By 1907 the press had picked up on the name, so shortly after that the team played their first season in the Yellow and Green they play in today.
Becoming Professional
After just 2 seasons of amateur football, it was ruled that the club that due to fees paid and several other financial matters, was a professional organisation. Shortly after, the team was forced to appoint it's first chairman. A man called Wilfrid Lawson Burgess was given the job, and so the club had to find their place in the professional game.
In May 1905 the club joined the Southern League. Due to restrictions on the ground, the club soon had to move to a large site than it's original Newmarket Road site. They chose an old Chalk Pit at Rosary Road, and named the ground The Nest. The First World War then hit the world of football. The game was suspended and the clubs funds vastly affect, so much that they went into voluntary liquidation. When the club was reformed in 1919, Mr C Watling was a key figure. His son, Geoffrey Watling, would go on to be a future chairman of the club.
Carrow Road
The team moved to Carrow Road in 1935 when their old ground, known as The Nest, was deemed too dilapidated.
The current stadium is made up of 4 stands named (from North East in a clockwise direction) The Barclay, the Jarrold Stand, the Norwich & Peterborough Stand and the Geoffrey Watling City Stand. The Canaries home games are played in the stadium with a capacity of just over 26,000.
In 2006, a Holiday Inn hotel was constructed between The Barclay and the Jarrold Stand. In 2007 the hotel opened to the public, and is constructed in such a manner that fans can watch the Canaries from their rooms.
